Experience

One of Italy’s top tourist destinations primarily due to the quirky leaning tower, there are surprisingly few luxury hotels in the area. The AC Hotel Pisa, a Marriott brand is one of the four star selections available. Based on the pictures and decent reviews, I was expecting a four star hotel in terms of service and quality.

Unfortunately the property failed to impress.

Driving from Milan, I arrived in the evening. Surprisingly the hotel’s name at the top of the building was not lit and until I got closer I wasn’t sure if it was open. After parking my car, I went to the reception desk. The lobby restaurant was busy with dining guests, but there was no one to be found at the reception. Eventually a waiter from the restaurant saw me waiting and checked in the back room to see if he could get some assistance. He returned explaining that sometimes they are not there. Ten minutes later a man arrived and processed my check in. The service once present was very good and even upgraded my room.

The room was modernly decorated with a seating area facing a TV and a work desk with a bright desk lamp. The mini fridge was located in the hall. A door led to the second room with an extra large King bed facing a small TV.

The bathroom was well designed with an external sink surrounded by mirrors. Behind the door was a toilet and bidet on the left and a bath tub on the right. At the end of the room was a his and her shower on each side. What a smart and modern design!

Exploring the hotel further I found the Fitness Room on the fourth floor with plenty of natural light through the windows. Strangely there was a label for “Turkish Baths” which seemed to be crossed out on the elevator panel and true enough I did not find any baths on that floor.

Attached to the lobby is the main restaurant which offers a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast selection was decent with standard breakfast items, pastries, yogurts, and juices.

The hotel is not far from the tourist sites by car or bus, but it would be quite a trek on foot. Tour groups seem to use this hotel as I saw large tour buses load up guests to take them to the sights. Conveniently, nearby is a mall with a supermarket and a couple of restaurants.

The reception seemed to be understaffed. Even on checkout, I had to wait five minutes for someone to show up.

Overall, the hotel is an acceptable stay for tourists visiting Pisa especially those that are driving.
