With the last minute booking of the trip, many hotels were already unavailable. Fortunately this new hotel located in the heart of Boca Grande still had some availability.

As we wanted to check out the Boca Grande area, so we chose this hotel for a night during our stay in Cartagena.

Experience

Arriving in the evening we checked in with the friendly reception staff and were escorted to our room.
We had a chance to play blackjack in the casino, but didn’t get to use the pool.

The next morning, our car to Santa Marta was booked through the hotel which was a painless experience as the staff were quite proactive. We also tried the buffet breakfast which was basic but made with fresh ingredients.

Location

Right in the center of Boca Grande, the hotel has a great location for shopping and dining. Only five minutes away from the old walled city, most tourist sites are easily reached by taxi.

The hotel is also only one block from the beach.

Service

In general the service was friendly and down-to-earth, though there sometimes was a wait for the reception.

They also handled our request well when we booked the car.

Room

The room I stayed in was a corner room with a private balcony. It had a large king sized bed in the center of the room facing a flat screen TV. There was also a desk and seating area next to the balcony. High speed wifi was a plus.

The bathroom was basic but with a shower, sink and toilet, it was equipped with the essentials.

Overall the room was very comfortable and clean, though the fluorescent lighting was tiring on the eyes.

Activities

• Tours: The hotel has a tour desk that can arrange tours around the city as well as transportation. Their rates are slightly higher than market price, but decent.
• Pool: Take a dip in the rectangular pool overlooking the city! Great view and a perfect place to cool off.
• Casino: Didn’t spend enough in Cartagena yet? Stop by the casino to drop (or possibly win) some more cash. Small casino, but they do have table games and it wasn’t too crowded.

Dining

The main restaurant of the hotel is upstairs next to the pool. The breakfast is served buffet style here. The food was freshly made and the service was competent.
Temperature in the room could have been a bit better adjusted. Bring a sweatshirt because it does get cold sitting in the air-conditioned room.

Summary

Atlantic Lux is a new central property in Boca Grande offering clean quality rooms at a competitive price. If you are looking for a place to stay outside of the walled city, there are few better choices.
