Experience

After the recent earthquake that destroyed much of the city, a few new hotels have opened. The top rated hotel on Tripadvisor and one of the highest star rated properties available, I chose the Best Western Premier Petion-Ville for a stay in the capital of Haiti.

The new hotel has become a go-to for those seeking a bit of an international luxury standard.

Our experience started with an airport transfer in the hotel’s Hyundai van. Granted it was two hours late, but this we were told was due to extreme traffic. The professional driver welcomed us with some cold water and took us directly to the hotel.

Check-in was very pleasant and the ladies behind the desk quickly arranged everything and introduced the hotel to us.

They also arranged a driver to take us on their suggested itinerary to see the important sights of the city. The driver in a private car was very professional, safe, and dependable.

That evening we enjoyed the happy hour selection at the terrace bar. It seemed to be a popular event with a crowd of expats and locals.

The concierge/reception suggested a restaurant for the evening and a nearby bar. The hotel shuttle took us to both locations with a quick call. The shuttle is complementary for in-town transfers though expect some wait times.

Check-out was also quick and painless. The warm staff were keen to welcome us back for another stay.

Location

Right in Petion-Ville, the best neighborhood of the Port-au-Prince area. City center is easily accessible by car and good bars and restaurants are nearby.

Service

The down-to-earth staff are friendly and helpful, especially the team at reception. Check-in and check-out was performed in a jovial manner with a smile and even a couple of jokes. The team made the stay very comfortable and helped advise on the situation around the hotel and downtown Port-au-Prince. Suggestions of an itinerary were given and a driver was arranged for a tour.

All the employees we spoke to had an excellent command of English and understood our requests.

Security and drivers were also very professional.

Room

The entire hotel, but especially the room displayed an impressive luxury standard in a recently devastated area. With comfortable twin bed configuration, the room had all the necessities including a desk with wifi and ethernet connectivity, flat screen TV, coffee/tea making facilities, ice bucket, effective AC, safe, and radio/alarm.

The bathroom was sleek and clean with a soft orange glow providing mood lighting. The set up included a standalone shower, toilet and a sink.

Activities

The hotel primarily serves business clients and humanitarian groups that hold meetings and conferences at the hotel. Obviously tourism is not the main draw of Haiti. Though there are ways to relax during a business stay

  • Pool: A private and secure outdoor pool is available for guests to swim or lounge and catch some sun.
  • Spa and Gym: If a work out and revitalization is important, the hotel has the facilities.
  • Business Center: Right off the lobby a small business center is available.

Dining

The hotel’s main restaurant is located upstairs with a connected terrace bar. International cuisine with local dishes mixed in are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A full lobby bar is also available.

Summary

In a difficult place like Haiti, the Best Western Premier Petion-Ville stands out as an oasis of luxury and service. Few hotels can match the level of luxury and style delivered by this property.

I highly recommend the hotel for anyone looking for a safe and comfortable place to stay for business or pleasure in the Port-au-Prince area.
