Background

The 4-star Gaborone Sun Hotel is one of the diverse properties run by the Sun International Group, one of Southern Africa’s premier hotel and entertainment groups. The hotel has gone through many refurbishments and renovations since its original construction in the 1970s. It quickly became one of the city’s leading hotels and remains one of the most sought after hotels in Gaborone. Located near the center of the city, Gaborone Sun Hotel has easy access to cultural and athletic attractions like the National Museum and Art Gallery as well as the Golf Course.

Experience

Coming from Johannesburg, I arrived in Gaborone in the afternoon. The check in process was quick and effective. I soon received a key and was escorted to my room.

I stayed in a Standard Room which is ideal for both relaxing and working. The king sized bed faces a TV and a separate writing desk with convenient universal adapters. Amenities were as inline with a 4 star property including tea and coffee, satellite TV, mini bar, in-room safe, and air conditioning.

There are 196 rooms available in the Gaborone Sun Hotel which makes it ideal for large scale events and conferences. For high profile guests or those looking for something extra special, the Presidential Suite is almost a complete apartment with its own kitchen, dining and living areas all decorated in an African style. Luxury Rooms and Executive Rooms are also great options.

Mahogany’s Restaurant is the elite choice for fine dining at Gaborone Sun Hotel. The restaurant is clad in rich colors to match the mahogany wood and classy ambiance. While choosing from the range of delicious dishes offered on the menu, guests can enjoy music from resident entertainer Momo. I dined here with the Marketing Director, Martin, who gave me an introduction to the area. For dinner I had an exquisite impala carpaccio and succulent lamb shank.

Savuti Grill offers a little more spice in its carvery buffet. Main and side dishes include traditional African cuisine as well as Indian curry. After the main course, there’s a wide variety of sweet and savory desserts to end the meal.

For afternoon snacks and small bites the Conservatory & Pool Terrace provides a laid back atmosphere for casual conversation in the sun. I did some writing by the pool while enjoy some cold beers. For those who prefer to stay in the pool, the Pool Bar also serves small plates and cocktails while you sunbathe. There are also three other bars throughout the casino which serve a variety of tasty cocktails, cold beers and light meals to break up a day playing table games and slot machines.

The Gaborone Sun Casino is a popular spot for entertainment in the city. It is the largest of the four local casinos and offers gamers progressive slot machines, blackjack, and roulette. More serious players can try the Salon Privé where private roulette and blackjack tables can be requested.

There are many family friendly activities such as the outdoor swimming pool which is located in the privacy of the Gaborone Sun Hotel’s courtyard. Relax in the tranquil and serene environment with a drink or meal by the pool and escape the hustle of the city. There are also squash courts reserved exclusively for hotel guests and tennis courts with a full coaching staff available for lessons. Guests can also book a round of golf at the course next door which is usually a member’s only club.

The conference center is full of state-of-the-art equipment to suit both private events and business gatherings. The main conference area can be divided or combined to host up to 500 people in addition to the five other seminar or meeting rooms complete with private lobbies and facilities. The banqueting team is more than accommodating to ensure every detail is taken care of from lecture stands to catering.

The staff at Gaborone Sun Hotel was professional and efficient. The level of service was attentive to my needs. The team arranged for a car to take me on a tour of Gaborone in the morning.

With excellent facilities, like the largest casino in Gaborone, a central pool, squash and tennis courts and great restaurants the Gaborone Sun Hotel is a fine choice. The location is also highlight with close proximity to the center and cultural sites. I highly recommend the Gaborone Sun Hotel for pleasure or business.
