Highlights

  • Service oriented family run hotel.
  • Family friendly atmosphere.
  • Beautiful views of mountains and bay.
  • Relaxing sauna.

Background

Hotel Bláfell is a quaint little boutique hotel along the Eastern coast of Iceland. Fridrik Arnason, Hildur Hafsteinsdottir and their family still run the hotel which is a large part of what gives the hotel its unique character. Hotel Bláfell focuses on guest experiences and adventures like sea angling, puffin watching, fishing, abseiling, and horseback riding.

Experience

There are 34 rooms at the hotel which feels more like a mountain lodge fitting for the “land of ice and fire”. Hotel Bláfell sits along the main road, nestled between Skaftafell National Park and Lake Mývatn which makes it perfect for exploring the mountain range or a day cruise around Breiðdalsvík Bay.

My Double Room was nice and cosy with plenty of natural light and a fantastic view of the mountains. I had my own private bathroom, a television with satellite, free wireless internet, coffee maker, and telephone. The amenities were basic but comfortable.

Groups have the option of reserving larger rooms like the Superior Double, Triple or Family Room which can sleep up to five people. All rooms enjoys the standard amenities.

The restaurant at Hotel Bláfell is a favorite of both locals and tourists. The chefs are especially proud to feature locally sourced food from Icelandic farmers and fisherman. Guests get their pick of the local fare with a buffet dinner service or a full menu during lunch hours.

The lobby lounge is the main public space at Hotel Bláfell and features a roaring fireplace where guests can relax in cushy leather chairs and sofas to enjoy quiet conversation, books in just about any language or a lively board game. It’s also a great space for guests to interact with each other.

Another special feature of Hotel Bláfell is the Finnish Sauna which is open every evening or by request. It’s free for guests and is a perfect way to wind down the day before a late dinner or an evening nightcap. Book ahead if you are interested!

The wonderful staff at Hotel Baleful which made me feel at ease throughout my stay. Fridrik Arnason met with me personally to make sure my stay in the hotel and in area was comfortable. I appreciated the sightseeing tips.

The Hotel Bláfell offers a comfortable cabin-like setting with all the modern amenities. The location is stunning with a view of the mountains and the water just steps away. The owners are friendly and approachable, so ask them any questions you may have of the area. I would recommend Hotel Bláfell to any visitors of the area, a worthwhile stop on an Icelandic road trip!
