Experience: Radisson Blu Dakar, Senegal

A review of the Radisson Blu Dakar in Dakar, Senegal the trip Wandering West Africa.

Highlights

  • Luxurious rooms and amenities.
  • Great location on the coast and near sights.
  • Friendly and accommodating service.
  • Delectable restaurants and bars.

Background

The Radisson Blu Dakar has some of the most idyllic views along the peninsula. The hotel has won numerous awards since 2010 including TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence in 2013 and 2014. The hotel was built to be the premier hotel in Dakar and with a 5-star rating and multiple awards under its belt; it definitely lives up to expectations. As soon as I walked in I could tell no detail went overlooked, every inch of the lobby was stunning with modern décor with a little African flare.

Experience

The airport is only 13km away from the Radisson Blu Dakar and steps away from the beach in the trendy neighborhood of Fann Corniche.

The rooms at the Radisson Blu Dakar are second to none in the city. There are a total of 240 rooms including 54 brand new units which were added last fall. I stayed in one of the Business Class Rooms which was more than spacious and well decorated in blues and beige that mimic the gorgeous beach views. The room had a nice big work space with free fast wireless internet. I also took advantage of the satellite television to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. The private outdoor lounging space was also a pleasure.

The Royal Suite may be the best room in Dakar with its own kitchen, dining room and lounge. At 260 square meters, it’s almost as large as the ballroom and it even has its own Jacuzzi so guests have a choice of staying in or going down to the spa for a soak.

There are three fantastic options at the Radisson Blu Dakar when meal times roll around. Each restaurant features distinct menus. L’Avenue Restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes with a little regional flare from its Dutch, French, and African roots. A more relaxed option is the Pool Grill & Bar open for midday and evening meals. The poolside restaurant is well known around the area for their fantastic seafood as well as their views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s especially popular for lunch where guests can enjoy the sun and the infinity pool while they wait for a table. There’s also a separate Pool Bar which is happy to serve guests poolside so they can enjoy the water with a chilled drink. They feature a long list of beers, wines, and cocktails.

The Radisson Blu Dakar even has its own nightlife. The Little Buddha Dakar opens its doors at mid-day and last call isn’t until dawn. As the name suggests, the restaurant specializes in Asian-fusion fare. The chefs draw their culinary inspiration and technique from all around the Pacific Rim which includes favorites like sushi, Chinese food, and fresh California style meals. After the dinner hours the restaurant transforms into a lounge featuring a live DJ every night and dancing all night long.

If the Olympic-size infinity pool isn’t relaxing enough the Radisson Blu Dakar is also home to the Buddhattitude Spa Dakar. It occupies an impressive 1,200 square meters in the hotel and includes a steam room, hammam, pool, and rooms for beauty treatments. In all there are eight treatment rooms to accommodate the requests. If you arrive early the Tea Bar is a great place to pass the time. They don’t serve alcoholic drinks but healthy mocktails and smoothies. The hotel’s fitness center is also a part of the Buddhattitude Spa so guests can work-out and relax the mind and body all in one place.

The Radisson Blu Dakar makes an ideal spot for conferences and meetings. The facilities include a main conference room equipped wireless internet, audiovisual technology and the hotel’s event team to help with everything from IT issues to catering. The Mermoz Room is the hotel’s ballroom and has about 300 square meters of space which can be divided into two or three spaces to suit the occasion. There is also an air-conditioned tent available for outdoor events. There are also 12 meeting rooms for smaller business gatherings.

Service at the Radisson Blu Dakar was great. The staff at the reception were friendly and helpful.

It’s not hard to see why the Radisson Blu Dakar is one of the premier hotels in the city. The prime location and stunning vistas make it an easy choice for tourists. With fantastic facilities, accommodating service, and fine dining options, I highly recommend the Radisson Blu Dakar to any visitors to the capital of Senegal.
