Experience

Punta Cana is famous for its luxury all-inclusive resorts and is the main area for beach goers to venture to on the island. For a stay with friends, we chose the five-star Sanctuary Cap Cana after reading positive reviews and based on the pictures of the beaches.

Located slightly south of Punta Cana, the resort is situated in the middle of a long beach and within the hotel is a private very-fine pink sand beach. Though most guests stay on the hotel property bars and clubs can be easily reached by taxi or transfer.

We drove to the hotel from Santo Domingo and parked right in front of the hotel. Walking into the hotel you are greeted by the doormen. The check-in was handled professionally and we were even upgraded to a suite.

We then were shuttled to the room which was a brisk walk away. The bellhop introduced the Beach Front Junior Suite to us.

When entering the suite, you find yourself in the living room which had a seating area facing the large balcony doors and flat screen TV on the wall. A separate single bed was also located here. Walking out to the terrace is another small seating area with a large grassy lawn and a view of the blue waters.

The bedroom had a twin setup with large doors opening to the garden, next to which was a desk. The bed was very comfortable with quality linens. Bathrobes and slippers were available in the wardrobe.

The marble tiled bathroom had a bathtub, separate shower and toilet. There were two sinks and a large mirror. The fresh flowers on the towels were a nice touch.

The suite had all the expected amenities like air-conditioning, fans, minibar, in-room safe and my favorite, an espresso machine! Wifi worked well in the room.

Exploring the property, I found the layout to be great with the main building housing the reception and some restaurants which opens to a balcony that overlooks the main pools and sea. A waterfall from a small pool runs into another at the base of the stairs. From the main pool, you can walk right onto the beach. They have five swimming pools around the property, including one with saltwater.

We enjoyed the beach which is equipped with plenty of seating. Surprisingly more people were around the pool. The sand was very fine, almost dust like, which was comfortable to walk on, but we had to be careful with our phones as it got everywhere.

While we were in the water a party boat hung around the bay blasting music.

We walked to the adjacent beach passed more room flanking the sea. This white sand beach was very large and dotted with palm trees. There was also a restaurant on the beach. Unfortunately it started drizzling so we didn’t spend much time there.

The hotel also has a spa and access to some nearby golf courses.

In the evening, we went for dinner at one of the several outlets, The Wok which was quite disappointing in terms of food, service, and price. We had ordered Teppanyaki which we were first told we could not order because we were sitting outside, but then they changed their minds and took the order. Then we weren’t served the soup that was listed in the set menu and again we were told that it was because we were sitting outside. We weren’t told this when we ordered and it really didn’t make any sense either. After insisting, we were finally served our bowls of miso soup.

We decided to check out the reputed clubs in Punta Cana in the evening. We had our car, but there are organized events that take guests to the clubs as well. The friendly guards at the hotel entrance knew us by the time we left the property as we drove by so many times.

The next day we had a speedy and courteous checkout.

In general, the hotel seemed to cater more to couples and families, but we still had a great time. The property and layout are well thought-out and the pools are beautiful. The suites were very comfortable, spacious and luxurious. The restaurant was disappointing, but maybe the other options are better. I would recommend the Sanctuary Cap Cana to any vacationers looking for a luxurious all-inclusive stay.
