Background
The Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre is in the unique town of Swakopmund which is surrounded by the Namibian Desert except for the envious views of the Atlantic Ocean to the West. The 4-star hotel is built in the historic German train station which dates back to 1902. The hotel is an attraction of the town and one of the sites to visit.
The original building now makes up the public areas of the hotel with modern updates and additions to match the historic architecture including the casino, cinemas and fully equipped gym. The unique history of the hotel and the central location to stunning landscapes and cultural sites make the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre a regional favorite.
Experience
The Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre is a short drive from Swakopmund Airport, next to the new rail station. The grand entrance of the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre is reminiscent of a bygone era, full of class and style.
On entering, my check in was quickly processed and I enjoyed a welcome drink before heading to my room. I stayed in a Standard Room which featured a large photograph of the original train station on the wall and comfortable rustic furniture. The room looks out onto the pool area and green grass. The flat screen TV is mounted directly to the wall which you can comfortably watch from the bed and enjoy the air conditioning. There is ample space at the work desk with lovely views out the window and a small sitting area to enjoy a morning coffee. There is also a minibar, coffee/tea maker and complimentary wireless internet access.
The bathroom had an efficient set up with a marble countertop sink, toilet and bath/shower combination. Signature Legacy amenities were available on the counter.
Luxury Suites and the Presidential Suite are also available which feature separate bed and living areas overlooking the pool area.
Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre kept true to their locomotive roots with Platform One Restaurant. The 160 seat restaurant resembles the dining car of a train and recalls the elegance and romance of the Victorian era. Guests have a choice of the a la carte menu or specialty buffet spread. The restaurant also offers a wide wine selection to complement the cuisine.
One of the most unique experiences the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre has to offer is the Desert Dinner. Guests can enjoy a banquet under the stars and surrounded by the soft lighting of paper lanterns on special request.
With incredible landscape and seascape in the area, Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre offers activities to get guests outdoors and experiencing the unique Namibian offerings. Sandwich Harbout tours, desert tours, dune boarding, quad biking, skydiving, fishing, dolphin cruises and much more can be arranged through the hotel staff.
At the hotel is the Mermaid Casino. Games include blackjack, roulette, stud poker and an array of slot machines. The casino also offers a delectable assortment of snacks and a full bar.
More onsite family activities include the children’s game room, outdoor pool and two cinemas featuring different movies. The pool has both a shallow and deep end so kids of all ages can enjoy a refreshing dip. Sun loungers and umbrellas are placed throughout the surrounding lawn area to relax among the palm trees.
For business travelers the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre offers multiple conference and board rooms which can accommodate up to 460 people. Refreshments, lunch at Platform One, audio and media equipment are included with standard conference packages. Even the courtyard can be reserved for outdoor events.
The service at Swakopmund Hotel was warm and attentive so I felt at ease throughout my visit. The friendly staff helped me book tours and make the most of my Swakopmund experience.
The unique combination of a historic structure, central location and a wealth of activities make the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre an extraordinary hotel stay.
