Trip planning and overview of the trip A Long Malta Weekend where I tour country 135.
In the Mediterranean just south of Sicily, is an exotic island that occasionally pops up in conversation as a great vacation destination.
Malta.
Three main islands make up one of Europe’s and the world’s smallest and most densely populated countries. With its strategic location in the center of the Mediterranean, world powers have struggled to hold the island since the ancient Phoenician and Roman civilizations. The Italians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, Turkish and finally British have ruled the territory. Though small, this land has much to offer in terms of history, sights, natural attractions and cities.
One interesting factoid about Malta’s flag. In 1942, King George VI awarded the country the prestigious George Cross for bravery during WWII. Apparently this is the only country to receive the distinction which is usually bestowed on an individual. The cross remains on Malta’s national flag.
My four-day weekend would allow me to explore the capital city of Valletta, the coast of Malta island and the quaint Gozo island. This would be a perfect way to visit country 135 and come one closer to finishing up Europe.
Coming from Sardinia, there were plenty of flights via Milan or Rome and I would explore the islands by car.
Working with several sponsors, I had an excellent trip lined up!
Stay tuned!
