Quirra Castle is perched atop Monte Cudias at 296m. Constructed in the 12th century by the Giudici of Cagliari its strategic location allowed control over coastal areas and inland valleys. The castle later came under Aragonese control in 1324 and witnessed conflicts between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Giudicato of Arborea. Shanghai’s Maglev Train reaches 431 km/h, making it one of the fastest in the world. It covers 30 km in just 8 minutes, floating on magnetic tracks with zero friction. Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of the best preserved archaeological sites of Ancient Greece. Founded by Greek settlers in the 6th century BCE, Akragas (modern Agrigento) was one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient world. The stunning Doric temples, including the Temple of Concordia, stand as a testament to its power and artistry. Every year I try to do something unique to celebrate another journey around the sun and this year I chose Sicily. I wasn’t overly excited about my choice initially as I expected Sicily to be somewhat similar to Sardinia. During World War II, Poetto Beach was a strategic defense point for Cagliari. The Italian military built bunkers along the coast to guard against potential Allied landings. These concrete structures housed soldiers, machine guns, and observation posts, forming part of Italy’s coastal defense network. Despite their purpose, the bunkers saw little direct combat before the Allies liberated Sardinia in 1943. On the edge of a cliff is the Grotta di Senabardo, located in Palazzolo Acreide, Sicily. This Byzantine catacomb dates back to the 6th century AD. According to legend, it was commissioned by the Byzantine prince Senebardo for himself and his close friends. The cave features a central cistern and intricately designed canopied tombs. Years ago I heard rumors of a plane wreck in Sardinia and today I was finally able to visit. The wreckage of ATI Flight 12 still rests near Capoterra, Sardinia. It’s a tragic reminder of the 1979 crash that claimed 31 lives. The pilots misinterpreted air traffic control instructions, thinking they were over the sea instead of mountainous terrain. This critical error led to a fatal descent into the hills. A haunting site, frozen in time. I found the Fisherman’s House in Porto Paglia! The ancient masks of Is Foghidonis come to life in Sadali, marking the start of Carnival with haunting rituals and primal energy. S’Urtzu and su Pimpirimponi move through the streets, blending fire, tradition, and mystery in a celebration that has stood the test of time.
