- Friendly front desk staff and overall a well managed property.
Experience
Santo Domingo has a plethora of hotels to chose from. Due to ratings and the convenient location, I chose the Crowne Plaza Santo Domingo for our stay.
Located right on the seaside, the hotel is conveniently close to the historic center as well as a quick taxi to anywhere else in the city center.
On arrival to the reception immediately found my reservation and upgraded me due to my IHG Platinum Status. The front desk staff smiled and handed me a bottle of water and a granola bar as a welcome gift which was a bit underwhelming. The check in was quick, professional, and friendly.
Glancing around the lobby I noticed the lobby bar which had a piano for live music. Further into the building was a pastry shop and access to conference rooms.
A bellhop brought us up to the room, a Double Executive Oceanview Club Floor Room which was really comfortable with a small balcony and a view of the sea and pool. All the room necessities you’d expect from a Crowne Plaza were present. The bathroom which had a bidet, toilet, shower/bath combination, and single sink was decked out with a beautiful red marbled finish.
After settling in, we went downstairs to try out the pool. It was a bit chilly as the sun was blocked out by clouds but the pool area had a great set up. The main pool had a view over the sea with a bar behind and lounge chairs on both sides. Next to the pool was the large jacuzzi meant for a crowd.
Around the corner was a tennis court available to guests. Right before the entrance to the pool area was the spa facilities and gym.
We went down to check out the attached casino which unfortunately did not appeal to us as it only had slots and no table games.
Later in the evening we went to the Executive Club Lounge and enjoyed a game of chess over a couple of beers and snacks. A mixed crowd of Europeans were watching cricket nearby. The snacks included a small selection of tasty salads and hors d’oeuvres which were popular by the rate that they were being eaten but the lounge staff quickly refilled the plates.
Once we built up an appetite, we went down for dinner at the Nabu Restaurant. The ambience was great with large windows and open spaces. The chicken I ordered was a bit dry, though the sauce was delectable. Even though we were very late and the last customers of the night, the waitstaff in the restaurant were very pleasant and amicable.
Overall, the experience at the hotel was excellent. The rooms and facilities were clean, modern, and of Crowne Plaza’s standard. The views from the top floors are great and especially enjoyable with a drink on your private terrace. With several restaurants, bars, a lounge and a casino, there’s plenty to occupy your time while in the hotel.
I would recommend the Crowne Plaza Santo Domingo for business travelers looking for convenience and luxury and for tourists looking for a base in a prime location to explore Santo Domingo.
