Background
Georgetown is one of those fantastic places on the coast where the Demerara River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Nicknamed “Garden City of the Caribbean”, Georgetown is the urban heart of Guyana. The massive Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown is a new addition to the city’s hotel scene and the only international brand to establish itself in the country. With the Marriott brand, the hotel has earned a reputation as the most modern and luxurious hotel in the capital city.
Experience
The Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown is near two airports. It’s only a 26 mile taxi ride from Cheddi Jagan International Airport or less than 6 miles from the smaller Olge Airport which handles mainly domestic flights.
When I arrived the contemporary lobby was an impressive open space with plenty of natural light. The staff were very welcoming and checked me into my room. The waiting area extended into the lobby bar or upstairs. The lily inspired lighting was eye catching.
I checked-in at the front desk and went up to my Executive Level room which overlooked the city. In addition to my king-size bed I had a large lounge chair, work desk, LCD TV with satellite and access to the Executive Lounge serving complimentary snacks and beverages.
The Guyana Marriot Hotel Georgetown has a wide array of room options; there are 192 rooms and 5 suites spread over 9 floors. All guest rooms feature air conditioning, satellite TV, access to internet, a pull-out sofa or rollaway bed and large windows to enjoy the fantastic city and ocean views. 1 Bedroom Suites and Family Suites get to enjoy a little more space with a separate living room with enough seating to host a small group as well as an honor bar. The best category in the building is the Presidential Suite which features a large living room and a dining room crowned with a crystal chandelier.
The Terra Mare Restaurant is where the chefs combine earthy flavors with fresh seafood that gets delivered daily. Much like the rest of the Guyana Marriot Hotel Georgetown, the atmosphere was relaxing; the description says ‘casual’ but the upscale interior, creative menu and first-class service makes it trendy and elegant restaurant.
During the day the Caribe Boardwalk Pool Bar & Grill serves cocktails and casual dishes. This specific outlet was not yet open during my visit, but should already be operation at the time of publishing.
The pool area is connected to Guyana Marriot Hotel Georgetown’s Fitness Center which also features a whirlpool and an indoor pool that connects to the outdoor area. There’s also more than enough traditional gym equipment to keep the heart-rate up like treadmills, stationary bikes and free weights. One of the best features of the gym is the fantastic ocean view with floor to ceiling windows.
For business travelers there are plenty of facilities to host anything from small meetings to large conferences. The Guyana Marriot Hotel Georgetown has established itself as a major event center in the city with 11 event rooms spread over 8,000 sq. ft. The ballroom is the largest with over 6,000 sq. ft. that can accommodate anywhere from 72 in a conference setup to 733 in a theater setup. It can also be divided into four rooms Ando, Barama, Chitagong and Pakatuh. Several smaller boardrooms are available for smaller events. Each space is fully equipped with internet access, audio visual equipment, projectors and screens as well as an expert coordinator who can help plan your event.
The hotel’s service is a large part of their success. Everyone was warm and friendly especially the marketing and sales team. They not only gave me local advice, but invited me to join for drinks to explore the nightlife of the city!
The Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown has really lifted the standards of hotels in Georgetown. With a prime location, a chic atmosphere, luxurious rooms and facilities and a well-trained professional staff, it is easy to recommend the hotel as the best in the city and country!
