Fiji. The word alone evokes images of white beaches and turquoise waters. Near the capital Nadi is Denarau Island, a development of luxury hotels focused on providing an all inclusive getaway for the resort traveler.

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa occupies a large 1.5 km stretch of beach on the island. The brand showcases their signature design and hospitality in a prime location. Continuing my Pacifying the Pacific trip, I made it to Nadi and found the shuttle to take me to Hilton. I was looking forward to some relaxing and pampering so I was grateful when Hilton hosted me for a few days.

As soon as we drove onto the island, there was a security checkpoint. This was the first sign of the exclusivity of the area. The resort was a short distance away. The large atrium of the lobby was impressive with a tropical feel. A desk for activities was near the reception. I had a quick check in and was taken to my room by an electric shuttle.

I stayed in a 1 Bedroom Garden View room which was a suite with a separate living room, a kitchenette, a dining table, and two flat screen TVs. On entering I found a welcome note with some small Fijian gifts. The bathroom was really fancy with a soaking tub, shower, and sink decorated in creme marble and dark wood veneer. I was surprised to find not only a washing machine but also a dryer. This is essential for travelers and I wish more resorts would include these basic amenities.

I loved the balcony which not only had a great sea view, but also seating, a table, and even a barbecue grill!

This was truly a home away from home.

For the next few days though I had the option of cooking, I decided to sample the different restaurant offerings. Maravu is a fine dining restaurant specializing on Asian cuisine with a focus on fresh fish. Across from the pool is the other beachside international-cuisine restaurant, Nuku. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here.

Both restaurants have sweepings views over the sea and pool areas with an open design so the salty sea breeze can flow through.

There is also a Deli near the reception which is great for a cup of coffee and a shop to buy snacks.

In terms of activities, there was a lot to do besides relaxing. You could easily spend the day lounging by the two large pools (one being adults only), but I was eager to explore a bit.

The beach curves around the entire island, so I’d recommend taking a walk along the beach and make sure you are there for the sunset view. There are several activities available to guests either onsite or close by like a fitness center, the golf course, fishing, jet skis, sailing, diving and tennis. I was especially interested in the jet ski tour, where a guide leads you around nearby islands, but didn’t get a chance to try it out.

The sightseeing desk is very informative and can provide some excellent local information.

Port Denarau Marina is a short distance away, which offers shopping, restaurants, and bars. Ferries to the outer islands also leave from here.

If you are without a car, there is a rental agency right in the lobby, so you can explore the largest island of Fiji, Viti Levu.

Wellness is a large focus of the resort. Right next to one of the pools is a Spa Pavilion where you can walk up to get a quick massage. I booked a Fijian massage in one of the private treatment rooms near the reception building. I filled out a brief questionnaire so they could customize the treatment for me, including the ability to pick the scent that was used throughout the massage. The spa proudly uses Pevonia products.

I enjoyed my interactions with the team at the hotel, who would always take the time to greet you as you walked by. Meeting with some of the management team, I also got an inside look on the culture and living in Fiji.
