Background
This year the Kapok Hotel is celebrating its 45th anniversary. What began as a family restaurant is now a 94 room boutique hotel in one of the best locations in the city. The hotel is only a short saunter away from Queen’s Park Savannah which hosts Trinidad’s Carnival every year and is considered the most significant event of the year. Locals and tourists alike fill the streets with colorful costumes and music for the two day celebration and the Kapok is in the center of the action.
Experience
Arriving at Kapok, the registration process was straightforward and I was soon settling into my room. My room was a Kitchen Suite which is ideal for longer stays. It’s designed more like an apartment with its own fully equipped kitchen, living room, and a bedroom large enough to comfortably fit a king-size bed. It was spacious with contemporary furniture and exceptional views over the city and Queen’s Park Savannah. The room also features an LCD TV, cable, complimentary wireless internet, iPod docking station, in-room safe and of course a coffee maker.
The hotel offers a range of other rooms categories. The Standard Double is a great home base for those who want to spend their days exploring the city while the Studio features a kitchenette. There are also Balcony Suites with private outdoor spaces to enjoy some of the best views of the city.
Kapok Hotel features a varied cuisine selection. Kava serves the more international menu with gourmet burgers, pastas, salads, and pizza baked with fresh ingredients in the artisanal brick ovens. It also serves alcoholic drinks including some creative cocktails like the Kava’s Bushwhacker which is a mixture of vodka, coconut rum, baileys, amaretto, kahlua, coconut cream, grand marnier and vanilla ice cream.
For a more unique dining experience, Tiki Village is a treetop themed restaurant with panoramic views serving Asian/Polynesian cuisine. Dim Sum is served every Sunday, bringing a Cantonese tradition to the island.
The outdoor pool at the Kapok Hotel was a lovely escape from the heat. It’s large enough to do a few laps and there’s plenty of room on the sun loungers. There’s also a fully equipped Exercise Room with stationary bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, and free weights.
With a yearly event like Carnival next door, it’s no surprise that the Kapok Hotel provides some of the best event spaces in the city. There are rooms and equipment for any type of gathering whether it be a small dinner party or large business conference. Both Kava and Tiki Village can be converted into intimate spaces for weddings, cocktail parties, or any event. The largest room is the Kayak Room with southwestern views and room to seat up to 110 people. Smaller parties may prefer the Kahuna Room on the 9th floor with floor to ceiling sliding glass door and private balcony, perfect for the sunset.
The staff at the Kapok Hotel was professional and friendly. All my requests were addressed quickly and pleasantly.
Overall the Kapok Hotel is a great introduction to Port of Spain and the island of Trinidad. With the excellent location, the sights of the city are easy to visit and the high building allow for some wonderful views over the city. I highly recommend the Kapok Hotel especially if visiting during Carnival!
