Imagine a beach where you can get married then go surfing. This is what Breakas Beach Resort offers guests in Vanuatu. Located on one of the beaches of the capital city of Port Vila, this resort combines a natural setting with the convenience of easy access.
Arriving in the international airport I was greeted by two lovely ladies who placed a shell necklace over me and welcomed me to the island. I was continuing my Pacifying the Pacific tour and I had a night in Vanuatu before continuing to Espiritu Santo.
After a short drive I was sipping on a fruity welcome drink as I checked in. The hotel invited me to stay in a private beachfront cabana. As the room is right on the beach, I couldn’t wait to switch out of my sneakers. The interior was rustic with modern touches. Neatly hanging over the bed is a mosquito net. A desk and large mirror is against the wall next to the fridge and coffee making facilities. The large room can sleep up to three adults when using the day bed. Internet is available, but only with this prepaid cards you can purchase at the front desk. It’s a big of a hassle to refill each time you run out, but they also have a complementary terminal for guest use at the reception.
The bathroom had a beautiful open air shower with a wall created from coral rock.
Outside is a comfortable private terrace facing the sea.
I toured the grounds after settling in and found the restaurant which is connected to the lobby and the center of the action. As an adults only resort, the bar and pool area seemed to be very active throughout the day.
There were also guests kayaking or snorkeling with the equipment provided by the hotel.
The beach also has best surfing in Port Vila, so surf enthusiasts shouldn’t miss out! Just remember to bring your own board.
They also have a Day Spa where you can get massages or other spa treatments.
In the evening I went for dinner at the restaurant with a creative menu by Roy Ernst, the man behind The Rossi Restaurant downtown. I decided to sit at the Salt Bar (easy drink access of course) where I could also have my meal. The delicious cuisine is a mix of international and local dishes.
What made the evening even more enjoyable was the traditional dancing performance right in front of us. The dancers sang, played instruments, and stomped creating a fun atmosphere and really got the crowd to participate.
With a morning flight the next day, I took it easy. Though I was happy to relax from my hectic travel schedule, I wouldn’t recommend coming solo as this resort has a romantic atmosphere well suited to couples. This scene is perfect for weddings and the hotel offers several packages to choose from.
The staff were really great throughout my short stay. I actually had a leg injury which was getting worse and though the shops were closed by the time sought treatment the front desk help procure some helpful remedies.
For a carefree vacation or a romantic getaway, Breakas Beach Resort is a fine choice. As they say on their website, “Life is hard in the tropics.”
