Background
CenterHotel Thingholt is part of a group of six hotels run by the local Oliversson family. Each hotel is centrally located around Reykjavik’s city center so guests can enjoy the unique city atmosphere. The CenterHotel Thingholt has consistently been one of Reykjavik’s top hotels for years and has been nominated as one of the best boutique hotel of the year by the World Travel Awards more than once. The interior of the hotel has been transformed from the original mid-century factory into an ultra contemporary design featuring natural materials which were clearly inspired by the distinctive landscape of Iceland.
Experience
The feature wall in the lobby is stunning; the color and texture imitates the famous lava flows of Iceland and small dark glass masks represent the “hidden people” that live near the volcano in the center of the island. The rest of the lobby is modern and chic which makes the space feel both refined and ancient which is a perfect reflection of Icelandic culture.
I stayed in a Loft Suite where I had two floors to myself. The bedrooms and living rooms are separated by a sleek set of black and white stairs which makes it an ideal space for entertaining and having a peaceful night’s sleep. I loved the contemporary feel of the room; the monochromatic color scheme really made the natural wood wall accents and furniture pieces pop. The rest of the suite was nicely furnished with leather sofas, a good size desk with a fantastic view over the city, and a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.
The 52 rooms are split into four categories; Standard, Deluxe, Junior Suite and Loft Suite. Every room is air-conditioned, which may seem unnecessary in a place called Iceland but summer months do heat up. Free internet was reliable. There were also standard room amenities like an in-room safety deposit box, shower, hairdryer, and a minibar.
There are plenty of cafes and restaurants on every street of Reykjavik but I really enjoyed CenterHotel Thingholt’s Ísafold Restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel. The menu changes throughout the year to include the best local ingredients. There’s also a six course tasting menu put together by the inventive chefs which features some of the tastiest meats and vegetables like beef tenderloin, lobster, caviar, and mushroom salad. There’s also a delicious range of canapés which pair well with the long list of wines.
If you’re looking for a full day experience, the restaurant and CenterHotel Thingholt’s Ísafold Spa offer packages with access to the Spa and a six course meal which can be served in a private room fully equipped with a projector.
The Ísafold Spa is a beautiful space featuring unique materials and textures like lava, cave-like alcoves and waterfalls. Every guest is given a bathrobe, slippers and a towel to enjoy the sauna, hot tub, and rainwater shower which makes for the perfect day of pampering. The amazing service staff will even serve drinks while you relax in the hot tub. The Gym is also a part of the spa and filled cardio machines, fly weights and activity mats.
The CenterHotel Thingholt is a great option for those who need to get a little business done in between sight-seeing. The meeting room is located right next to the restaurant which lets guests enjoy a three-course meal during their conference or meeting. There is also lighter catering if preferred, wireless internet, projector, and a fantastic audio system that can accommodate any business or personal needs. The room also opens up to an outdoor patio area which is perfect for small cocktail parties.
The 24 hour service at the CenterHotel Thingholt is a large part of what makes it one of the consistently best hotel experiences in Reykjavik. The staff was very welcoming and happy to help with their expert knowledge of the area.
The CenterHotel Thingholt is an ultra modern hotel outfitted with the finest luxury amenities in one of the best locations in town. The hotel and staff highlight the distinct characteristic of Iceland and what makes it such a tourist destination. From the food on the table to the walls of the Ísafold Spa, every detail was stunning. I would highly recommend the CenterHotel Thingholt for an upscale adventure in Iceland.
