Background
The Gables Lakefront Motel is located in the small shore town of Taupo in the North Island of New Zealand. The area has recently become the main attraction for sporting events such as Ironman, cycling, waterski and cricket. The motel is family owned and run. As passionate adventurers and travelers, the owners know how what visitors are hoping for when searching for accommodation and aim to provide exactly that. Their philosophy must be working as they are ranked as one of the best properties in Taupo!
Experience
Arriving by car, the motel is easy to spot on the side of the road, next to the lake. Parking is available directly in front of your room. We soon met the friendly owner who checked us in and enthusiastically introduced us to the room.
Our unit was more like an apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchenette, a dining area and a family room. Recently refurbished in 2013, each apartment offers modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and television with Sky cable.
The apartment really felt like home, especially with the additional complimentary homemade cookies and fresh fruit. Next to the kitchen is a door to the garden. Free laundry facilities are available. A naturally heated hot tub was available and some rooms have hot tubs in the room.
From my window I also had a lake view. But the sunsets were best enjoyed outside to have a panoramic view of the beach and lake. The mountain peak in the distance across the lake is “mordor” from the Lord of the Rings series.
The motel doesn’t have a restaurant, but is in close proximity to the town center, which is lined with dining options. You can also bring your meal back to property and dine outside on the picnic tables.
All of Taupo’s activites and sights are easily accessed by a short drive or walking across the street to enjoy the beach. Don’t miss a hike through Tongariro-National Park!
Though focused on tourism, Gables Lakefront Motel is also very suitable for business travelers due to its convenient location and proximity to town.
Our stay was especially memorable thanks to the friendly staff. As a family operated motel, the staff prides itself on greeting every guest personally and giving an informative introduction to the area so guests can make the most of their visit.
