Experience: Grand Papua Hotel, Port Moresby

On my recent trip to Papua New Guinea during the Pacifying the Pacific tour, I had the pleasure of being hosted by Coral Sea Hotels. This company operates the largest hotel chain in the country across four cities.

Coral Sea took great care of me with hosting and tours. Not only did I stay at the tranquil Melanesian Hotel in the northern city of Lae, but I also stayed in their flagship property, the Grand Papua Hotel in Port Moresby.

The Grand Papua Hotel is easily the most luxurious property in the country. The 161 rooms and suites are encompassed in a skyscraper jutting out from the skyline. The property is centrally located and perched up a hill to offer sweeping views of the bay.

Entering the lobby, I immediately sensed that I was in for a different experience. With marble floors and professional service, this hotel was not only on an elevated experience in Papua New Guinea, but also exceeded the standards of many high-end properties on an international level.

Travel with my friend Sean, we had two Executive Rooms on an upper floor. The rooms featured the standard amenities like coffee/tea making facilities, a flat screen satellite TV, safe, ironing board, and of course fast wifi. I appreciated the comfortable working desk where I could do some writing as well as the minimalist bathroom with shower.

By far my favorite aspect of the room was observing the fantastic view.

There are several options for dining. The Grand Cafe is a bit more casual to grab some sandwiches and coffee. This was crowded especially during lunch time when the businessmen come in for lunch.

The Grand Brasserie is the main restaurant located on the lobby level. The cuisine is primarily international with a mix of Asian and Pacific options. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here daily.

I was able to access the Executive Club Lounge, a private club with sleek black and white interiors and floor to ceiling windows showcasing the city below. There is also an open air terrace to enjoy the sunset views with a glass of champagne or bar snacks.

For a drink, check out the Grand Bar. Its colonial design with traditional wood floors and high ceilings will transport you to the past for a more memorable experience.

Wellness and health are an important part of the hotel. The Grand Spa by Spa Pua offers massages and spa treatments while you can get a full workout at the gym. The outdoor pool is perfect for laps or just relaxing and sunbathing. The poolside bar also makes it convenient to order a drink or snack. There is also the Grand Hair Salon onsite for your styling needs.

This high end property also specializes in events for conferences or weddings. With a capacity of up to 600 guests, this is the premier location in town.

The management team at the hotel went above and beyond to make sure we got the most of our stay. Not only did they organize a tour of Port Moresby for us, but they even took us kayaking in the harbor from the Royal Papua Yacht Club where we explored exposed wrecks from WWII!

My experience in Papua New Guinea would not be the same without the wonderful care of the Coral Sea Hotels group and my “grand” visit to Port Moresby was thanks to the Grand Papua Hotel. With such modern comforts, luxurious interiors and a winning team, the Grand Papua Hotel is easily the finest property in town.
