A review of the Hotel Plaza Grande in Quito, Ecuador on the trip Carib Isles, Latin Miles.

Highlights

  • Historic property right in the central Plaza de la Independencia.
  • Fine French inspired cuisine with live opera.
  • Luxurious rooms and amenities.
  • Highly personalized service.

Background

Hotel Plaza Grande is has been one of the most unique buildings in Quito since it was designed and built in 1930 for Juan Diaz de Hidalgo. The award-winning hotel was also the first building to be over 2-storeys tall which sets it apart from any other historical building in Quito. It was also the first formal hotel in Quito when it was originally remodeled in 1943 as the Majestic Hotel. Since then it has undergone another facelift to make it one of the best hotels in South America. It’s also in an unbeatable location on the North side of the famous Plaza de la Independencia overlooking La Iglesia Catedral and The Presidential Palace.

Experience

The Hotel Plaza Grande has been called “eclectic” in terms of architecture which is easy to see as I approach the main entrance which stands out from all the other buildings around Plaza de la Independencia. I was immediately greeted by the professionally dressed staff when I entered the doors, stepping into a bygone era of luxury.

I went up to my Plaza View Suite with lavish furniture and fresh flowers on the table. These 5-star suites are some of the most sought-after in Ecuador. The dramatic window drapes perfectly frame the amazing view of the Plaza and its picture perfect landscaping. Inside, the room was very spacious with high ceilings and classic architectural detailing throughout. I had an open sitting area with comfy sofas, a large work desk and the softest linens and pillows. I also liked the traditional fountain pen and paper for writing notes. Each room also has a private bathroom fully stocked with luxurious toiletries to enjoy in the hot tub.

Each room has its own unique charm and fantastic view. The Royal Suites include all the luxurious features as the Plaza View Suites while the highest end option is the Presidential Suite. It boasts a separate dining room, lounge and kitchen as well as two astounding balconies to enjoy the views over the Plaza de la Independencia. Each of the 15 room feature 5-star amenities like cable TV, wireless internet, air conditioning, a stocked minibar and a hot tub.

The flagship restaurant at the Hotel Plaza Grande is La Belle Epoque which is the most refined dining experience in historic Quito. La Belle Epoque takes inspiration from the heavy French influence in Ecuador during the 1940s. The menu is full of classic French dishes prepared with local Ecuadorian flair. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list curated to pair with the meal. To top it off, La Belle Epoque is Quito’s only locale to offer live Opera performances during dinner.

For more traditional Ecuadorian fare, the Café Plaza Grande is open afternoons and evenings. The café has a nice casual atmosphere great for people watching in the square. There is live music daily with the Ecuadorian guitar duo.

A great place for an after dinner drink is the hotel’s cellar wine bar Cava El Claustro. With over 1,500 bottles, the selection will satisfy the most demanding wine connoisseur. The intimate space is styled after medieval Spain and can fit up to 52 people making it ideal for events.

For large events guests can reserve the Salón San Francisco which can house up to 200 people for cocktails and 100 for a formal dinner. The hall occupies the top floor where guests can enjoy the view from the terrace of Plaza de la Independencia. The room itself is quite the view in its own right; the barrel vaulted coffered ceiling elegantly compliments the crystal chandelier.

There are also spa facilities like a sauna and massage room with several massage selections.

With only 15 guest rooms, the staff are able to provide an extremely personalized experience. Besides being well taken care of in the hotel, the reception also guided me on visiting Quito.

The Hotel Plaza Grande is one of the finest hotels in South America that I’ve had the opportunity to stay in. This historic property, in the best location in the old center, has the 5-star service, facilities, and dining experience to stand unrivaled as one of the premiere accommodations in the country. I highly recommend Hotel Plaza Grande to all travelers searching for luxury in the heart of Quito.
