Background
Luderitz Nest Hotel is located right on Luderitz Bay in secluded area near the city center. The landscape is stunning on the approach to the hotel, desert terrain on one side and seascape on the other. Built in 1998, it was recently renovated to include all the comforts which have become standard in high-class hotels.
Experience
Arriving at Luderitz and had arranged for an airport pick up. Once at the hotel, I settled into my Double Room which had the feel of a modern beach resort. The main bed faces a workspace and mirror. Next to that is a luggage rack. There’s also air conditioning, satellite TV and access to wireless internet which is available throughout the hotel.
The ensuite bathroom includes a sink, bath with shower and even a heated towel rack.
The main attraction of the room is the balcony and view of the Atlantic Ocean out of the sliding window. Relax and enjoy watching the birds in their natural habitat, especially the oyster catchers.
Other rooms include Family Rooms which adjoin for larger groups but can still close for privacy. Luxury Suites include a separate lounge and desk areas, two satellite TVs, mini bars, and a large balcony.
Each of the En-suite Rooms and three Luxury Suites enjoy direct sea views.
The Luderitz Nest Hotel’s Penguin Restaurant is locally acclaimed and the only full service restaurant in Luderitz. The international and Namibian cuisine is prepared by an award winning executive chef. In addition to the unique view the restaurant prepares exclusive specials showcasing local lobster and abalone.
The complimentary breakfast is served here. For dinner I dined on some delicious klipfish fresh from the ocean.
A newer addition to the hotel is the Crayfish Bar & Lounge which was opened in 2013 by kite surfing champion Sebastian Cattelan. The lounge is full of comfortable seating where guests can enjoy the best cappuccino in town paired with warm baked patisseries or fresh oysters with a fine South African wine. The bar also stocks Namibian beers and liqueurs, whiskies, champagne, and cognac for after dinner drinks.
A great feature of the Luderitz Nest Hotel is the access to the private beach and jetty. There is also a private pool surrounded by lush grass and palm trees, reserved for guests only. Lounge chairs are also available very comfortable for those that want to enjoy the sun, as the “nest” shape of the building protects the pool from the wind.
There are plenty of activities that the hotel can help you arrange. The most obvious is the neighboring ghost town, Kolmanskop. There are 4×4 tours into either the Namib Naukluft Park to the North or Sperrgebiet National Park to the South. Catamarans embark daily to Halifax Island where visitors can see the largest population of African penguins. There’s also a good chance to see Cape fur seals and Heaviside dolphins on the tour which are unique to the region.
The special event and conference venues are ideal for a unique business or private affairs. Both the Diamond and Sand Rose rooms look over the lush front lawn and Luderitz Bay. They have also both been recently renovated and can host any number from 5 up to 200. Combining the local seafood and custom tours makes for an unforgettable event for friends or colleagues.
The staff of Luderitz Nest Hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. Besides the front desk team organizing the details of my stay, I had the pleasure of meeting the general manager, Ulf Grunewald. He was very passionate about his community and with his group, they have been involved with many projects to improve all aspects of the town’s quality of life.
The Luderitz Nest Hotel has a prime location right on the sea, fine fresh seafood dining and a great responsible team. I would highly recommend this hotel for any visitors to Luderitz or Kolmaskop.
