Background

Abidjan has developed into a bustling modern city and with wealth comes luxury hotels. The Sofitel Abidjan is known as one of the most exclusive and high end hotels of the country. This five-star property is located in an upscale suburb on Erbie Lagoon overlooking Saint Paul Cathedral. Originally built in 1963 by Moshe Mayer, the property had a major renovation in 2011. Its design blends French grandeur with local charm.

Experience

Flying in from Monrovia, I was picked up by the Sofitel team and eager to enjoy the experience. On my arrival I was in awe of the massive property. It has just about everything you could desire onsite.

I stayed in a superior room with a wonderful view of the lagoon. The large king-sized bed faced a flat-screen TV and working desk. A minibar and safe were available and the room was kept at a pleasant temperature with the central air. The bathroom had a spacious rain shower featuring Lanvin toiletries.

The Sofitel Abidjan has three restaurants and four bars. The Le Toit D’Abidjan is a fine dining French restaurant with a great city view. La Brasserie also serves French cuisine in a smart casual atmosphere. La Gourmandise is the main restaurant where the breakfast buffet or alla carte meal is served. I was especially impressed by the excellent service at the breakfast buffet. All the restaurants seem to focus on using fresh ingredients from international and local sources.

One aspect that is especially attractive of the hotel is the vast amount of activities available to visitors. There is a fitness center, spa, tennis courts, and even a cinema showing films in French and English. Shopping is available at boutique stores around the hotel. An 18-hole golf course is nearby which the hotel can arrange for.

The two large outdoor pool areas are a highlight with relaxing loungers and bar service. One of the pools even has a children’s play area so families can also enjoy a day outside.

A large auditorium has been used for everything from concerts to weddings and large events. The custom lighting and effects make it an especially unique facility in Abidjan.

Business facilities are also plentiful with a lounge, event rooms and spaces.

The Sofitel Abidjan Hotel Ivoire was a true delight to stay in. The tailored service, massive property and offerings, fine restaurant selection, and luxurious rooms create an experience that will leave one longing to return. For personal and business visits to Abidjan, the Sofitel will surely not disappoint.
