Tornado Tour of South America – Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil
A review of The Aubrey in Santiago, Chile.
Highlights
- Artsy modern design and decoration.
- Beautiful property with terraces and an outdoor heating pool.
- Peaceful and private grounds with sights and sounds of local (and not so local) wildlife.
- Great in-house bar and restaurant.
Experience
This well rated property opened in 2010 by Australian/English owners brands itself as the first true boutique hotel in Santiago.
The hotel connects two mansions dating back to 1927 and 1932 and was recently renovated to create a modern feel while maintaining its colonial charm.
My friend and I were looking forward to experiencing the uniqueness of The Aubrey.
On our arrival in the evening, our taxi took us through the security gates to enter the main courtyard. From there we went through a wooden door to the reception. We were quickly checked in and shown our room. We immediately noticed how peaceful the grounds were especially compared to the rowdy bar streets right outside.
We started our night with some drinks at the intriguing Piano Lounge. A complimentary Pisco Sour was included with our stay.
The receptionist gave us some suggestions for nightlife before we set out for the evening.
The next day we enjoyed the scrumptious made to order breakfast with an optional buffet. The jolly character of our waitress only brightened our day. Smiles all around.
Exploring the property I found the heated pool. It was difficult to resist going for a dip, but time did not allow it. Santiago was waiting.
A friendly German receptionist gave us an extensive introduction to the city and some great recommendations like the walking tour.
Checking out we could leave our bags as we toured for the day. On my return, getting bags was a simple process. And with a wave to the staff, I said bye to a great stay at The Aubrey.
Location
Centrally located right in the Bellavista neighborhood, there is a huge selection of restaurants and bars right at the hotel’s door.
Neighboring the property is the entrance to the funicular and access to Cerro San Cristóbal. The park also houses the National Zoo of Chile which would explain some of the animal noises I thought I heard during the night. I’m glad I wasn’t hallucinating.
Service
Front desk staff was helpful and efficient in their tasks while the restaurant staff were really cheerful and welcoming. The service throughout the property respected guests’ privacy and solitude. They were not intrusive but ready to assist in anyway.
Room
With only 15 rooms in the hotel, each one is unique. We stayed in a Pavilion room that was bordering the park wall with a refreshing outdoor private patio.
The shower had glass walls on both sides curtains.
The set up of the room includes all the necessities like flat screen TV, minibar, safe, and great complementary Wifi throughout the property. We had a twin beds set up that felt very open with the bathroom designed into the room like a modern studio. A path between the separate shower and bathroom leads to the outdoor terrace.
Activities
- Tours: The concierge can help organize any activities and plan your stay in Santiago.
- Pool: Heated pool provides the perfect place to take a dip any time you desire.
- Spa: Get a massage with a view over the Bellavista neighborhood.
Dining
The main restaurant offers an international fare with a great chef and excellent service for breakfast included in the rate. In the evening tapas are available.
There is also the stylish Piano Bar on the first floor for your evening drink.
Summary
Located in one of the best neighborhoods, the property, rooms, and service establishes The Aubrey as the luxury boutique hotel of Santiago.
Discerning travelers will appreciate the character and convenience of this excellent hotel in the heart of the city. I highly recommend The Aubrey.
