Tairona Inca: Colombia and Peru in 2 Weeks
A review of Titilaka from a two night stay at Lake Titicaca!
Highlights
- Luxury experience oriented property with focus on preserving and sharing local cultures.
- Extravagant lake view rooms.
- Amicable and genuinely caring staff.
- Fine dining restaurant onsite.
Experience
Passing by Lake Titicaca on our way to Colca Canyon from Cusco, we chose the number 1 rated (TripAdvisor) 4.5 star property in Puno.
Our experience with Titilaka began with a Mercedes van pick up from Puno. Daisy a friendly staff member gave us a wonderful introduction of the area and activities on the hour or so drive to the hotel. We were offered wet towelettes and drinks.
Arriving, the receptionist was waiting to greet us and escorted us to our rooms to complete the check-in process.
That evening we enjoyed the exquisite fine dining in the hotel restaurant.
The next day we participated in two activities, a visit to the Uros Islands and rowing in the reeds.
In between the activities we had time for a delicious meal again at the main restaurant.
A regular happy hour took place before dinner by the fireplace lounging area. Interesting guests, sweet cocktails, and a warm fire created a comfortable atmosphere.
Dinner was very special as the chef baked a large cake for my brother’s birthday. The staff came out and sang Happy Birthday to celebrate. The evening couldn’t have been merrier.
The next morning the hotel organized a taxi and prepared breakfast boxes to go.
Location
The hotel is on a rocky outcrop set right in the middle of Lake Titicaca. About forty minutes away from the Puno center, the hotel is somewhat isolated which actually adds to the charm. To arrive there, one must drive through small villages providing a real look into the local communities.
The hotel car or a taxi provides easy access to visit sites.
The property also has a dock so that some lake tours can start directly from the hotel by boat.
Service
Staff were welcoming and friendly. Calm and composed, they sought to anticipate and meet the needs of their guests with a smile.
Every experience with each staff member from the reception, tour guides, and waiters was splendid.
Room
The rooms were impressive with sweeping views of the lake. I stayed in a Dawn Room which had a beautiful view of the sunrise.
The large plush beds are the centerpiece of the room facing the ceiling to floor windows.
The bathroom was open into the room and separated by glass wall set on wood flooring. A large standalone bath dominated the entrance which led to a shower and closed door toilet. Two sinks were agains the wall across the hallway.
Fully stocked minibar is complementary with the room.
Activities
- Experiences: One of the focuses of this hotel is help guests experience and understand local cultures and sites of interest. Tours are available to many different places such as the Uros Islands, Copamaya, and Sillustani. Some tours are additional cost depending on your room package.
- Activities: Besides the tours, there are several adventurous activities such as hiking, biking, and kayaking.
- Multimedia Room: A small reading room with TV and DVDs is downstairs as another option to enjoy the evening.
- Cocktail hour: A daily happy hour takes place at the hotel bar. Grab a pisco sour and sit by the fireplace and enjoy the view.
Dining
The restaurant is on the main floor next to the bar area. This fine dining establishment is one of the highlights of a stay. Excellent dishes of local and fusion cuisine are prepared by skilled chefs. Choose from the daily specials, regular menu, or request something specifically. The kitchen will do everything to accommodate!
It is opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner service.
Summary
The Titilaka focuses on the guests’ experience which is why it has established itself as the primary luxury hotel in the Puno area. Peruvian culture is seamlessly integrated throughout aspects of the property, tours, and service. The rustic yet luxurious rooms with views over the lake in addition to top-notch service complements the stay.
If the ultimate experience in Puno is your goal, then a stay at the Titilaka is a must. A charming boutique hotel, the Titilaka is sure to meet and exceed your expectations.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Puno.
