Doha has become a very popular layover point with Qatar Airways connecting cities around the world. A long layover is the perfect chance to visit some of the cities top sights.
Here are my top five sights of Doha easily visited in a day.
5. The Pearl-Qatar
The artificial island development is unique as foreign nationals are able to purchase property here. Though mostly a residential and shopping area, it’s worth walking around and see the marina, high end stores and large luxury apartment buildings.
4. Katara Cultural Village
This expansive village covers 1,000,000 m2 and holds major events like the Doha Tribeca Film Festival and TEDxDoha. Besides offices, the village is home to restaurants, shops, a beach, a mosque, an amphitheater, and traditional fort and tower architecture of ancient Qatar.
3. Souq Waqif
The most well known souk in Doha is famous for garments, souvenirs, spices, and traditional crafts. There are also restaurants and hookah lounges. I got my country tourist shirt here!
Don’t miss The Emiri Diwan Palace (the Presidential Palace) which is in walking distance of the souk.
There are plenty of mainstream shops in the major malls around the city as well.
2. Doha Corniche
Take a stroll along the horseshoe shaped walkway and see the beautiful parks, dhows in the harbor, and the iconic Oyster monument. Combine this with a visit to the museum and take a cruise or stay for the sunset.
1. Museum of Islamic Art
The most famous museum of the city and possibly country, this massive exhibit is the first in the Persian Gulf! Other museums to see are the Qatar National Museum and the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
