Background

RLJ Kendeja Resort & Villas is a luxury hotel started by the American billionaire and philanthropist Robert L. Johnson. With an aim to “give back” to the community, he has invested to create an offering quite unique to Liberia. Since 2009, the 78 room hotel has been welcoming guests to an elevated standard of hospitality previously unknown to the country. With villas right on the beach, I was excited to check it out.

The property is conveniently located between the international airport and downtown Monrovia. They have a great transfer service with professional drivers and well maintained vehicles.

I was greeted with an enthusiastic smile before being shown my villa. The self-contained villas have plenty of space with a lounging area, a large king bed and a modern bathroom. The dark marble bathroom countertops create a drastic contrast to the cream colored walls. A large walk in shower was a delight to use.

My villa also had wifi which was very convenient. The best part was walking out of the villa to see the beach just a few footsteps away.

The main restaurant named Posh serves an international menu with some local flavors in a casual setting that includes a refreshing poolside deck. The breakfast buffet is also served here.

Drinks are also available at the showpiece circular Lobby Bar.

The Oasis Spa provides massages and other rejuvenating options. Look no further in Monrovia, as this is the only available spa with proper treatments. They also offer mani-pedis and styling with Matis products.

There is also a gym with the essential equipment to keep your exercise routine.

The pool is a main attraction on the property. Surrounding the restaurant deck, this pool is ideal for a refreshing dip to cool off.

Though a beautiful resort, Kendeja also accommodates business needs with two large banquet rooms outfitted with the latest technology. Events and conferences can be organized in this prestigious environment with catering options included.

Service throughout my stay was excellent. From the waiters and waitresses remembering my favorite drink order, to the excellent guide that helped me explore Monrovia safely, I was in good hands from the get-go.

The manager Mr. Peck hailing from the UK was really friendly and interesting. We sat over a couple of beers and he told me the hardships of working in a city ravaged by Ebola and how his team maintained the quality and services of the hotel throughout. He also stuck through the entire period. What an incredible achievement!

Overall, RLJ Kendeja is one of the best resorts I’ve seen in western Africa. The quality of the rooms, location on the beach, and excellent management and service made the stay one to remember. When traveling through the next time, I’ll definitely be back!
