Experience

Built in the 1920s in memory of the explorer John Hanning Speke, who discovered the source of the Nile River, the Speke Hotel is now proudly owned by The Ruparelia Group of Companies. The only hotel to embrace the colonial architecture of the past, it is proud of its heritage as the oldest hotel in Kampala though it has made many upgrades to combine 21st century comforts to old time charm.

We stayed in the Twin-Deluxe Room with a patio which sets the standard for hotels in Kampala. Custom furnishings, 300 count sheets, a one-touch “goodnight” button, and other amenities provide a relaxing space to plan your day of sightseeing or business meetings.

The bathroom was tiled and spacious with a walk-in shower.

To make our stay as comfortable as possible the room was fully air conditioned, offered a mini-bar, electronic safe, satellite TV and free unlimited wi-fi. They also offered 24 hour room service and same day laundry.

The central location of the hotel to the Kampala’s Business District makes it an ideal venue for conferences and meetings. All the conference rooms are designed to complement the original building and provide a spacious and private place to conduct business. Special menus can be arranged for participants and each space can be adapted to suit the client’s needs. There is even an in-house business center which is licensed to exchange currency and arrange travel plans.

The Speke Hotel offers four restaurants and bars for visitors to gather and interact with locals. The outdoor bar terrace gets really packed and happening in the evenings. Some of the most popular nightlife is conveniently right downstairs!

The cuisine varies from Frontier Tawa Tandoor (clay pot) cooking to Italian to specialty dishes like Nile Perch. In keeping with the historical theme of the hotel, the Khyber Pass Restaurant is inspired by the important mountain pass connecting Afghanistan and India. Through this pass marched countless cultures and with them came their cuisines which are now prepared by International chefs for guests of the hotel to enjoy.

For a historic and authentic atmosphere, there is no better choice to experience Kampala than the Speke Hotel. The varied selection of restaurants and bars allows guests to experience different cuisines. The hospitality of the staff and on-site travel agency makes it an ideal stop for any traveler.

I recommend the Speke Hotel for any visitors to Kampala!
