Experience

A modernized and converted residential building, Ten Bompas Design Hotel is an oasis in Johannesburg. The quaint all suite boutique focuses on luxury but also fine dining and events in their new conference facilities. With great reviews and an excellent location, Ten Bompas was an easy choice for a stay in Johannesburg.

Coming from Lesotho, I had a night to enjoy the property before flying off to Madagascar. The hotel was easy to locate and the gate security let me into the parking area. After check in, I explored the suite.

Ten Bompas’ rooms are all suites so that every guest has plenty of space and with only 10 rooms, service is very personalized. The suites were individually designed by different designers to combine modern luxury and the designer’s take on an African theme.

On entering my suite, there is a living room area furnished with plush sofas, ottomans and a work desk. Connected is a guest restroom. An inclusive minibar is under the desk. The centerpiece of the room is the fireplace and flatscreen TV also visible from the bedroom. Rooms also feature fast wifi, iPod deck and music systems, and Nespresso machines. Newspapers are delivered daily and guests have complimentary laundry service.

The bedroom features a large plush bed, closet, and powder table. The master bathroom includes a steam shower, bath, his and her sinks, and plenty of natural light from the ceiling to floor windows looking into the garden.

Both rooms have access to the wrap-around terrace with seating to view the garden.

Ten Bompas’ Winehouse Restaurant is a highlight of the establishment. The name is inspired by Parisian artist, Joanna Flatauof’s painting of Amy Winehouse that hangs in the dining room. It is also a pun on the fine selection of wines available in the large wine cellar. The double-volume glass fronted wine cellar houses a multitude of South African wines and rare vintages that oenophiles can truly appreciate. The in-house chef prepares superb French cuisine and creates a seasonal menu to incorporate ingredients grown in the vegetable garden on the property. Guests can also dine on outside terraces next to the gardens and pool to enjoy South Africa’s mild climate.

The outdoor Lap Pool for swimming is available to guests. The mall is nearby for shopping needs and main tourist attractions are a short drive away.

Service is indeed very personalized and attentive. The team knows each guest and greets them on arrival and departure. Any questions or requests, the team is happy to oblige.

A new addition to Ten Bompas is Space, the conference and event center which can be customized to the needs of any event. The two conference rooms can be used individually or combined to accommodate up to 120 people. The Private Dining Room can also be reserved for small parties. All the spaces are designed with clean lines and contemporary style to create the most flexible spaces for weddings, business meetings, conferences, or any special gatherings. The rooms are fully equipped with projectors, writing boards, intercoms, and sound systems. It even has its own kitchen for catered events.

With an excellent fine dining restaurant, luxurious suites, attentive service and a central safe location, I highly recommend the Ten Bompas Design Hotel for business and pleasure travelers.
